Play with papier mâché and make fine heads and costumes

Papier Mâche is newspaper layer on layer between paste. You can make things, such as heads, costumes or masks.

Begin with making an inner skeleton, it can for example be made of wood, steel wire or cardboard.

On top of this skeleton you built the body by glueing small strips of paper. The smaller the strips, the easier it will be.

A recipe on papier mâche (however it can also be bought finished)

This is what you need:
Newspapers
1 1/2 dl water
1 dl flour
Clingfilm
A bowl

Mix flour and water together until all the lumps are gone. Cover your skeleton with clingfilm. Rip the paper into strips or small pieces. Dip the strips or pieces into the flour/water mass and put it around your skeleton, cover it with 6-7 layers and of course if it is a bigger skeleton you will need more.

When you are done place the figure (or what it is you have made) on a warm and dry place, for example a radiator. It has to dry for 12 - 24 hours. When it is dry you can begin to decorate it and after that lacquer it.

A few examples on how you can use papier mâche:
